About Theatre Odyssey
Theatre Odyssey is a community-run arts organisation based in St Andrews, Fife. We are dedicated to promoting the study of Classics through the arts. Founded in 2000 by John J. Taylor, we have performed many plays and storytelling events, including shows at the Pittenweem Arts Festival, Byre Theatre, Ramshorn Theatre (Glasgow), and schools around Scotland and in the South East of England.
John J. Taylor is the Artistic Director of Theatre Odyssey and a teacher and Housemaster at St Leonards School in St Andrews, an international boarding school. He has been telling Greek myths for many years in schools, at festivals, on beaches and in caves (yes, in caves!)
Brian Craib is a composer, arranger, and has for many years been an instrumental music teacher for Fife Council. He has written many scores of music for Theatre Odyssey, including the music for the full length production of Medea in 2006, and accompaniments to various myths on double bass, strings, guitar, recorder and all sort of other instruments!
Visiting Primary and Prep Schools
In association with St Leonards School in St Andrews, we hope to visit primary and prep schools to tell the story of Theseus and the Minotaur, with musical accompaniment, answering questions about the show and the story. The show would be most suitable for Primary 4 to 7, and we could visit a class or do the show as a whole-school assembly. The interactive performance lasts about 25 minutes, followed by questions from the children. We can offer these sessions on Monday afternoons or Tuesday mornings for the rest of this academic year, and as we are a community organisation, we charge no fee, though contributions towards travel would be welcomed. You can also come for a visit to St Leonards for the performance if you prefer. Why not make Greek Mythology a class project? You can also use the poster overleaf in your classrooms to promote the show and to spark interest before we arrive!
